Temperatures are set to plunge again this week in a fresh blast of wintry weather – but Shropshire and Mid Wales look set to avoid snow predicted for other areas of the country.

Forecasters said temperatures overnight would be back below freezing over the next few days.

The coldest weather is expected between Wednesday and Friday when temperatures could drop to minus 4C (25F) overnight.

It will also feel increasingly cold in the daytime, falling to 1C (34F) as a chill north-east wind strengthens through the week.

Eastern parts of the country are most at risk of show showers with Shropshire and Mid Wales missing out. There is not expected to be any repeat of the heavy snowfalls and extended Arctic conditions that brought the country to a standstill last month, forecasters said.

Gemma Plumb, from weather experts MeteoGroup, said: “There is a cold wind coming from the north, which will make conditions seem much chillier.”

Meanwhile a major snowstorm in the US left planes grounded and trains and buses out of action.

Hundreds of thousands of homes were without power with temperatures below freezing all day, with utilities warning it could be days before it was all restored.
