Bucks boss Rob Smith
Boss Rob Smith is challenging AFC Telford United to prove that their dramatic return to goalscoring form is not just a flash in the pan.
The Bucks returned from Droylsden on Saturday with their second consecutive 5-1 victory, having beaten Vauxhall Motors by the same scoreline last Tuesday.
The two wins have elevated them to seventh in the Blue Square North, their highest standing in several weeks.
But Smith, while delighted by his side’s display against the Bloods, is insisting it will mean nothing if they do not follow up with three points against Gainsborough Trinity tomorrow night.
“Nobody let us down, everyone fought for the shirt,” said Smith. “We’ve scored 10 goals in four days, and it felt like we hadn’t scored that many all season.
“The supporters have had a difficult time of it, the club’s taken criticism, but we’ve bounced back and shown what we are capable of.
“Now the aim is consistency and the challenge is to keep this going – there’s no point getting a result like that if we can’t back it up against Gainsborough.”
Smith felt the Bucks got their tactics spot on, successfully stopping Droylsden from playing their usual style and taking the game to them.
He also hailed the terrific team spirit in the camp, which he insisted has always existed throughout the campaign.
“We wanted to try and stop them playing from the back,” said the Telford chief.
“I thought the gameplan worked on Saturday, some days it does and on others it doesn’t. When it does I’m a tactical genius, when it doesn’t I’m useless.
“But the basics are that we worked hard and we came together as a group.”
- Telford have set new dates for two home games postponed during the harsh winter. Farsley Celtic will visit the New Bucks Head on Tuesday, March 2 and Eastwood Town will be the visitors on Tuesday, March 16.
