No more Macc misery – Simpson
Friday 5th February 2010, 11:27AM GMT.
Boss Paul Simpson is urging Shrewsbury Town not to take tomorrow’s trip to Macclesfield for granted – and to learn from their last two meetings with the Silkmen.
Macclesfield sit 17th in League Two, having won just four games at their Moss Rose ground all season.
But they did earn a 2-2 draw at the Prostar Stadium on Boxing Day, Dave Hibbert scoring an injury-time equaliser to spare Town’s blushes.
Macclesfield were also convincing 3-0 winners against Simpson’s men on their own patch in February last season, while Shrewsbury’s record against the teams in the bottom third has not been great this time around.
“They are an awkward side and a side who we struggled against on Boxing Day,” said Simpson.
“We didn’t do ourselves any favours when we went there last year either.
“We have to be spot on for every single game now. We have to treat every single game like the most important game of the season.
“If we want to be a side who are considered as as one of the top sides then we have to do it properly against them all – those at the bottom as well as those at the top.
“We had the disappointment last week of losing against Accrington at home, but the only way we can do something about it is to get something tomorrow.”
Simpson has a few tough decisions to make tomorrow, not least who to leave out in defence.
Right-back Dean Holden is still not fit so youngster Danny Taylor is likely to get another chance to further enhance his growing reputation.
But skipper Graham Coughlan has trained all week and appears fully recovered from the hamstring injury he sustained at Burton last month.
Should he come straight back into the starting line-up, it leaves Simpson with a choice between Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and loan man Joe Skarz to play at left-back.
“It’s a nice problem to have,” said the Town chief.
“I brought Joe Skarz in so we would have competition for the back four and I think he’s done very well so far.
“But so have Shane and Kelvin (Langmead), so we will have to see.
“We are going to a place tomorrow where we need brave players and leaders.”

A very valuable 1-0 win at Macc. Steven Leslie gets the goal. Maybe a small squad is what we need? I am joking we do need more cover…
Are Salop now a better away team than home team??
