Flower show charity makes £52,000 profit

Friday 5th February 2010, 11:26AM GMT.

The charity behind the Shrewsbury Flower Show made a profit of £52,000 last year, a turnaround from a £283,00 loss in 2008.

But bosses of the Shropshire Horticultural Society have slashed their donations to charities from £339,000 to just £27,000.

Society chairman Mike Carver said the donations had been reduced due to “pressures on the society’s assets.”

The flower show alone brought in an income of £855,331, up more than £20,000 on the previous year.

In his annual report, Mr Carver said: “The flower shows is, of course, the most high profile event of the society’s year and in 2009, the 122nd show was blessed by excellent weather on both days which led to greatly increased number of visitors passing through the gates.

“The cost of laying on a show of the size and complexity of the Shrewsbury Flower Show is enormous and we are therefore very fortunate to have enjoyed the support of sponsors, some of whom have supported the show for a number of years and others who are new to us.”

Mr Carver said the society had emerged very strongly from an economic downturn which had “serious implications for similar charities, some of which no longer survive.”
