Protesters outside Falcons Court in Much Wenlock.

Residents of one of the “jewels” in Shropshire’s crown were celebrating today after planners called time on developers building a house in their town.

More than 100 residents of Much Wenlock turned out to protest yesterday at the site of the controversial building in Falcons Court.

They wanted to show the strength of opposition to the development by Bennett Homes to Shropshire Council members who were visiting the site ahead of a crunch planning meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

As a resident of Much Wenlock, the reaction to this is ridiculous! Seriously there are more important things to be worrying about in life…and as for Much Wenlock being the ‘Jewel of South Shropshire’… wake up and smell what you’re sovelling, I have never met so many arrogant people with a grossly inflated sense of self importance! I’m certain other areas of South Shropshire have a better claim to be a Jewel!

“The protest outside Falcons Court in Much Wenlock. One opponent said it had caused “more offence than any other in the town”.

What more offence than the drug dealers selling to minors? The same dealers that then hang around outside the school waiting, while no-one says a word???
Obviously it appears a House that is not selling drugs, or hanging round kids playgrounds is more offensive!

Customer would like to request an additional container for the new plastics collections. Many Thanks.

In a strange way, I really agree with ‘Van’, not so much with his harsh approach, but let’s put this in perspective here people. Across the Ocean thousands of people have just lost their homes and family members in a horrific natural disaster, and all these people can do is moan and groan about a development.

I’m all for conserving our heritage, and keeping places of natural beauty, beautiful…but come on, as a residents of Much Wenlock for many years, and also a consultant for local youth authority by far its no ‘Jewel’ of Shropshire. Under the surface of the black and white houses, Wenlock has a horrific youth drug problem. Which is only going to get worse, so while these people take time out to moan about bricks and mortar, maybe they should invest more time in really looking at the ticking time bomb that will have an adverse effect on the towns social integrity. So drop your placards shut your mouth and open your eyes a little bit wider to the real problems that your town faces, and then you will have something really to make a song and dance about.

I wouldn’t exactly describe Much Wenlock as a jewell! More like a run down obstacle on the A458 that stops me from getting to work as quick as I’d like. Is there anything other to wenlock than a big hill, petrol station & roadworks?

I’ve heard about the pompous folks of wenlock. I think they need to have a good look round because wenlock is certainly no jewell. Get over yourselves people!

The majority of these folk belong to an age living on past images of Wenlock gone by. This small town needs regeneration if it is to survive in the future. Surely the compromise offered by the developer was the right one? builders no longer use wattle and daub!! After all the old bank is also becoming an eye-sore now it’s empty.
Lastly, having lived in Wenlock, what this place is crying out for is a youth centre. Only then will the drug problem be able to be addressed instead of them hanging round the church and the old priory.
What will these snobs leave to the town’s legacy? absolutely diddly-squat.

Another small town in a small county with a small mentality.

    There’s not Much in Wenlock.

How many seeking to protect this backwater, are from there, as opposed to incommers?

#8 What difference does that make BB?

I doubt if anyone who has protested had family stretching back to when many of those ancient houses were built and even if they had would it give them more rights unless of course they owned them?

The local reaction does seem somewhat extreme and will probably result in a half built, scaffolded structure lingering for ages whilst the developer appeals the decisions.
