Letter: Action needed over historic building
Thursday 4th February 2010, 7:17AM GMT.

Letter: The Charlton Arms Hotel in Wellington is an historic coaching inn in the centre of the town, but it is presently closed and has been neglected for years.
This is shameful state of affairs and is a blight on the town.
I and many other local residents are concerned at its neglect and the lack of action by the town and borough councils in getting it restored and re-opened.
A rebuilt Charlton Arms Hotel would fully support the regeneration of the town and it would provide a focal point for the community.
It has considerable potential for new owners with imagination and marketing flair.
I realise it is a difficult situation for local politicians, but I think it is now time for the Telford & Wrekin Council to take urgent action to compulsorily purchase the building to save it from further neglect and decay and then to look to work with a national pub or hotel group to re-open it as a hotel.
This is a key issue for Wellington and it’s time for some immediate and positive action from the Telford & Wrekin Council.
Such action would be warmly welcomed by many in the community.

why would telford and wrekin council bother about this place in wellington?
now move it to telford town centre and it would never be allowed to get in that state.
town centres like wellington, newport, oakengates etc could be run down as far t&w council are concerned

I completely agree that the Council has allowed the hotel to decay. It is time that Councillors took some action to put a CPO on the building and then look to a private pub group to take it on. The regeneration of Wellington needs a focal point and a reopened Charlton Arms would provide would boost the morale of everyone in the town.
