A charity fund which was set up to help the five people most seriously injured in the Shrewsbury explosion, which happened just after the new year, so far stands at £5,000.

The Bridge Street fund was set up to help Scott Godbold, Sam Devine-Turner, Annie Davies, Sarah Pearse and Kiley McDonnell who were all hurt in the suspected gas explosion at the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road on January 3.

Sam, Scott and Sarah, who lived in a flat destroyed in the blast, lost all their belongings as a result.

The fund is set to close on Valentine’s Day with organisers asking for any outstanding money to be paid in by then.

Councillor Jon Tandy, who is organising the fund, said they would be holding a table top sale in the Square, in Shrewsbury, this Saturday before the account was closed. The event will run from 11.30am to 3pm.

He said: “The money is still coming in and we are hoping to have a final figure soon. It’s wonderful the amount of money people have given.”

The final figure will be split five ways between the victims to be spent in any way they wish.

Last weekend Scott, Annie and Sam attended a charity fundraiser at the Severn Cellars and Warehouse in Howard Street. A number of town businesses have put out collection buckets and residents have raised funds with a variety of sponsored events.

Tonight Scott is due to receive a bravery award from the Yorkshire House pub for his actions in saving the life of flatmate Sam.
