Damian and Joanne Davies with their son, MatthewThe family of a Shropshire soldier who died while serving in Afghanistan today said they hoped to find closure after his inquest.

Joanne Davies, widow of Marine Damian Davies, said she was now looking to the future after a coroner yesterday recorded a verdict of unlawful killing while on active duty.

The 27-year-old marine, of St Georges, was killed in an attack in Helmand Province on December 12, 2008, along with two other soldiers. He also left young son, Matthew, as well as parents Ken and Maddison, brothers Carl, Warren and Austin, and a sister Ceri.

Mrs Davies, who did not attend the inquest in Trowbridge and spent the day with Mr Davies’s mother, said the inquest had offered their family some closure.

She said: “Now they can rest in peace. It’s closure too and hopefully we can start to move on a bit but we will never forget him.”

Marine Davies’ mother, Maddison, said she had set up an online petition on Downing Street’s website calling on the Prime Minister to give out an official parents’ medal for those who lost children in war.

The petition already has 596 signatures. She said: “It would be a medal to wear on memorial days.”
