Businesses turn £2,500 into £30,000 for charity
Thursday 4th February 2010, 7:59PM GMT.
Enterprising businesses given £2,500 by the Shropshire Star have turned the cash into more than £30,000 for life-limited children.
They will be honoured for their efforts in the Hope House/Shropshire Star Corporate Challenge at a special awards ceremony tomorrow.
Each firm was given £50 and asked to use it to launch money-spinning schemes and generate more funds for Hope House Hospice based near Oswestry.
Hospice fundraising manager Vanessa Thomas said she was delighted with the cash raised, which was still being totted up ahead of the awards night at the hospice.
She said: “The businesses who took part came from Whitchurch in the north down to Ludlow in the south, and from Newtown across to Albrighton. We had shops, pubs, clubs, beauticians, hairdressers, manufacturing companies, solicitors, accountants, and businesses ranging from one-man-bands to major employers.”
Organisers said they were amazed at the variety of ideas the companies had for changing their £50 note into a larger amount for cause.
Vanessa added: “There were raffles, karaoke events, hair blow-drying days, rugby players being waxed, an X Factor event, sponsored walks, food fayres, Christmas fairs and car races. You name it and these businesses tried it.
“The results were phenomenal. We are hugely grateful to the Shropshire Star for the generous sponsorship in making this possible, and, of course, to all the companies.”
