House could be demolished after protests
Wednesday 3rd February 2010, 11:00AM GMT.
Developers could be forced to bulldoze a partly-built house in one of Shropshire’s most picturesque market towns after an army of protesters branded the home an eyesore.
People power prompted members of Shropshire Council’s area regulatory committee to yesterday throw out a revised planning application for the home at 26 Falcons Court, Much Wenlock.
The councillors also agreed to enforce an order to demolish it. More than 100 angry residents had protested at the site earlier in the day when the councillors visited to see the development by Bennett Homes.
Councillor Peter Phillips told the meeting: “Much Wenlock is the jewel of south Shropshire and needs to be treated with preciousness.
“At some stage we have to make a stand and we will get public support and improve the reputation of the authority. Otherwise why bother?”
He said the original planning consent for a smaller property made in 2006 was “not without its flaws” and added: “I think we should refuse the application on many grounds, not least because it’s overbearing on its neighbours and the street scene.”
An enforcement order was previously granted but was delayed so the revised application could be considered. Protest leader and Much Wenlock town councillor David Turner said the refusal of planning permission may not be the end of the saga. He said developers would possibly take the decision to an appeal.
