The incident happened at about 3.30pm yesterday, just after the victim left the store in Mytton Oak Road, Copthorne. She was left shaken and upset. Two men, one in his late teens and the other in his 30s, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and are being quizzed by police.

The woman was walking along Oakfield Road after visiting the Co-op supermarket and the post office when her bag was snat-ched by a man in dark clothing and a dark hat. Police searched the area and the two men were arrested later that evening.

Constable Ruth Barclay appealed for anyone who might have witnessed what happened or seen suspicious activity in the area around that time to contact police.

She said: “A red Vauxhall Corsa with a distinctive, square-shaped rear number plate was reported to have been acting suspiciously in the car park around the time of the incident.”

She added the victim said there was a man at the end of the street who she believes saw what happened. “I would ask this man to please contact police,” she said.
