Letter: County’s pothole blight

Potholes in Station Road, Oakengates.

Letter: I read with interest the letters and comments regarding the continuous number of potholes in Shropshire and would like to comment on the letter from Alwyn Cox complimenting the Shropshire Highways Department in responding quickly in dealing with a pothole in the road at Queenshead.

We shouldn’t be too hasty in complimenting the Highways Department, but ask them why there are so many potholes today in Shropshire and why roads are not being maintained to a high standard expected from all motorists?

As we all know, the high funds collected from car tax are there to maintain our roads. This seems to be no longer the case.

With more cars entering our roads each year, surely there must be more funds available for maintaining our roads, so why does the Highways Department just continually bodge them up with a bit of asphalt?

It is also commented that a pothole is filled within 24 hours of being reported. I ask the Highways Department if these pot holes don’t get reported then do they get left unfilled?

If your intentions today are just to fill these holes and not spend the money collected from car tax on maintaining our roads, then go round and fill all those potholes. There are plenty out there.

I would like to report every pothole in Shropshire, now you have 24 hours to fill them.
