Calverhall row ends quietly at the AGM

Tuesday 2nd February 2010, 6:00PM GMT.

bowlsThe ‘Calverhall controversy’ that has dogged Shropshire bowls was consigned to the history books – with barely a whimper, writes MALCOLM FLETCHER.

A record attendance at a county association AGM produced 96 who were eligible to vote at the Reman club in Shrewsbury last night.

But the fireworks many expected failed to ignite as a Whitchurch League proposal that effectively prevents the Calverhall situation from ever being repeated gained the two-thirds majority required with little debate.

By 56 votes to 26 against, a new rule was passed that says every application to run a competition will be approved by the county body, providing the necessary 14 days notice is given and the £5 fee paid.

And in a late twist, Calverhall stalwart John Wynn – who did not appeal against his ban after Calverhall hosted a family fun day doubles on the day Shopshire won the Crosfield Cup without permission – was encouraged to now do so by county chairman Barry Jennings.

The Gang of Four senior team selectors who delivered the Crosfield Cup as promised (Mick Jones, Bob Moss, John Nash and Dennis Lewis) were re-elected . . . and given a new veterans role.

And new county president Alan Mayhew used his acceptance speech to express grave fears for the future of bowls and amateur sport in Britain.
