Third Ludlow meeting falls foul of weather
Monday 1st February 2010, 8:21AM GMT.
Ludlow have lost their third National Hunt card in succession because of weather – for the first time in the racecourse’s history.
A combination of frost and snow accounted for today’s meeting after clerk of the course Bob Davies conducted an inspection early yesterday morning.
It means there has been no National Hunt racing at the south Shropshire track since December 17, but Davies insisted there were no major financial concerns. “We do have insurance so it’s not the end of the world – but we want to be racing and we don’t want this weather to go on,” he said.
“This kind of ‘proper winter’ comes around once every 15 or 20 years and there have not been that many days since our last meeting where we would have been raceable.
“We lost consecutive meetings with the foot-and-mouth crisis (in 2001) but we have never lost three straight meetings to the weather.”
Davies admitted he had no option but to abandon yesterday morning.
“We had a snow shower on Friday which covered the course and that still hadn’t cleared yesterday,” he added.
“We also had a forecast of overnight frost so there was no chance of racing and no point keeping people waiting.”
Ludlow’s next meeting is due to be held on Wednesday, February 10.
