Snow and ice cause gridlock

Parts of Shropshire were gridlocked today as fresh snowfall caused chaos on the roads.

Hazardous driving conditions led to a spate of crashes across the county which closed roads and brought traffic to a standstill. A serious smash on the M54 led to long tailbacks on the westbound carriageway between Shifnal and Telford. And the A458 Bridgnorth to Shrewsbury road was closed at Harley Bank after vehicles became stuck.

Many motorists claimed that roads had not been treated, although council chiefs insisted the gritters had been out overnight.

The smash on the M54 caused long delays for motorists after a Nissan car collided with an articulated lorry and was then spun into the path of another lorry just after 6.30am.

A woman in the Nissan was cut from the wreckage by firefighters and taken on a spinal board by ambulance to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. Two lanes of the westbound carriageway were closed off as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police were called to reports of a crash on the A458 at Harley Bank just after 6.40am but it turned out to be a lorry and two other vehicles that had become stuck. The road was closed just after 7am for about half an hour until vehicles were able to get through. Vehicles were also reported to have crashed in Quatt and near Minsterley.

Telford & Wrekin Council said salt lorries were out between 12.30am and 4am today. Council spokesman Nigel Newman said: “We are still under the directive from Government to reduce the amount of salt we use, however, which means we are using a slightly less concentrated salt mix than we normally would.”

And Paul Smart, Shropshire Council’s programme and contracts manager, said: “We are closely monitoring salt supplies. We would like to reassure people that we are still able to fulfil our commitment to grit our defined network which includes all A and B roads and other high risk sites. Our gritters have been out across the county over the weekend treating the roads.”

Fresh snowfall was forecast to hit parts of Britain again today with up to 5cm expected in northern and western Wales and the north of Scotland, with lighter flurries elsewhere.

It comes as a report today said the cost of last month’s big freeze on households topped £2 billion and millions of homes were uninsured.

No, Telford. They have NOT been gritted.

Aquaduct backed up ages to go to A442 because of tailbacks from Woodside/Madeley going through.

There were a lot of idiots on the road this morning driving too fast on the Eastern Primary, not indicating, and going round the Stafford park roundabout in the outside lane because they are too cool to queue..
But i suppose the council/Highways agency will get the blame..

There was definitely some gritting going on yesterday. I could hear grit pinging off my wheel arches as I drove over to Lilleshall last night.

The gritting was done at the wrong time.
I live on a bus route and that was gritted at 16:30 yesterday. It then drizzled for a while and washed the salt away. Later on, it stared to freeze and then snowed on the frozen ground. Its hardly surprising therefore that all the roads were like a skating rink this morning.

    Telford, Born Slippy.

IF they were gritted, then the grit was sealed below a layer of ice. T&W your public didn’t perceive gritting had occured.

The A518 Newport by-pass was like a Snow Trucker route at 745am today, not a sign of grit on one of the busiest routes into Telford. The roads were frozen by about 7pm last night.

The EP was reduced to one lane, something not right, by far the worst conditions so far this winter. !!!

Grit melts snow. It doesn’t have any effect on ice which is what we had this norning. They did grit the roads but by then it had already frozen.

I remember seeing a gritter go past my house (Madeley) yesterday evening around 5.30pm. But was really surprised to see how bad conditions were on the road today – definitely much worse than last months snow.

T&W clearly tried, but would have hoped that the lorries would have been out again as someone must have known what was going to happen.

With all the complete idiots on the road this morning, its a wonder we haven’t seen more crashes….. Wish I’d stayed in bed….

They had definitely NOT been gritted. I attempted to get to university this morning and got as far as Junction 2 of the M54 before deciding it would take too long. Getting off at junction 4 M54 I then queued for an hour and a half to get round the island and up through Prioslee! The gritters were out trying to grit around the cars as they were struggling to get up the hill. The road was just as bad travelling downwards and was not gritted.

My journey just to junction 2 M54 and back to Donnington took 2 hours and 40 minutes

I followed 2 gritters last night on my way back from Telford Retail Park where Sainsburys is at around 4:45pm and then again going back up to Stirchly Sports Centre from Madeley at around 5:45pm.
I think the problem may have been that the gritters were out too early and all the traffic just erased it from the roads before the real snow came etc.
I didn’t sleep very last night and everytime I got out of bed to check out of the window up until around 4am it was snowing in 1 shape or another.

Salt – What salt? No roads between Little Dawley and South Halesfield had been gritted this morning, not even the bus routes.
Could anybody please explain why bus routes normally get top priority, surely gritting the busiest roads first would keep the traffic moving hence be more cost effective.Nobody would want to follow the bus routes unless they had plenty of time on their hands!

I thoroughly enjoyed my commute between Telford & Cannock on the A5 this morning! Slippery roads + rear wheel drive roadster = much fun and lots of opposite lock!

Roads in Priorslee, including Castle Farm Way WERE gritted at about 4pm Sunday, but they were covered this morning.

As others have said, I think the temperature fell quickly so that the grit didn’t work. My central heating kicked in at about 4am on the frost-stat which suggests it was about -5.
