Frustrating time for Town fans

How frustrating it was for a team containing four Town rejects to end our five match unbeaten run in a week of no transfer activity, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger.

Many fans were glad to see the back of Michael Symes, Darren Kempson, Ian Dunbavin and James Ryan, but they came back to haunt us on Saturday as Accrington continued our trend of inconsistent playing at home.

The 1-0 defeat was made worse by the fact that the players couldn’t deliver on an occasion when more than 5,000 fans turned out – something which had happened only once in the previous four home matches.

Isn’t football a strange game? Last year we could hardly buy a win away from home, yet we turned the Prostar into a fortress.

Twelve months on and our away form has picked up dramatically and we have picked up some impressive results on the road. But at the Prostar fans never know what Town team is going to turn up and in games we should be winning, we have struggled.

And the reasons for this? Maybe it’s a change in personnel or maybe its Simpson’s slight change in tactics. What do fans think?

Despite the defeat Town remain in the play-off positions, but they are nervously looking over their shoulder with other teams still playing catch up in terms of games played.

Out of nowhere, we could easily find ourselves mid-table playing catch up ourselves after the other teams have played their games in hand.

It’s been another frustrating week on the transfer front and with the deadline getting ever closer, there is little sign we are going to bring in players of quality.

I hope I’m wrong because yet again Saturday’s result proved we are desperately short in strength in depth, especially in attack.

Ideally we could do with bringing in a player like Paul Benson from Dagenham or John O’Flynn from Barnet, but at this stage of the season it is unlikely their clubs will want to let their star players leave.

Simpson remains confident of bringing in fresh blood, but my fear is they will only be young loan signings who sometimes work out, but other times have no passion or commitment to play for the club. Watch this space!

The players will have to quickly pick themselves following Saturday’s defeat and string together another impressive unbeaten run.

On paper our next game it looks relatively easy with an away game against Macclesfield. However, in recent times I have found my trip up to Moss Rose a very unhappy one and can’t remember the last time we came away from their with three points.

    James,

Simpson needs signings now, the current squad is very small and lacks depth.

The game was very poor with a lack of atmosphere and bite.

On Macclesfield away well I’ve been there around 10 times and only one win…

Enjoy your default playoff position while it lasts stfc. You won’t see it again once the other teams have played their games in hand!

Correction please: which fan was pleased to see Jimmy Ryan leave? Everyone I knew thought it was a mistake at the time.

I have been a supporter of the manager but his tactics in the first half on Saturday were reminiscent of the first half against Staines. No-one had the role of playing wide right and consequently the play was all bunched up in front of the East stand. Danny Taylor played well but when he got the ball there was never an outlet and, consequently, he had to lump the ball up into a crowded area. Sitting in the West stand it felt as though we all had an infectious disease! He did at least make some decent decisions in the second half in that the three he took off all had truly awful games.
