Probe on cause of blast to continue

Saturday 30th January 2010, 10:15AM GMT.

Experts investigating the cause of the Shrewsbury explosion today said it would be at least another two months before their inquiries are complete.

The Health and Safety Executive is continuing to try to discover what caused the blast, which saw flames rip through a first floor flat injuring 12 people and damaging town centre buildings. A gas leak is suspected.

Five people were seriously injured, three of whom have been allowed to return home after treatment in hospital.

Sarah Pearse, 19, is still being treated for burns at Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital while panto star Kiley McDonnell has been moved to a hospital nearer his home in London where he will continue treatment for spinal injuries.

A spokeswoman for the HSE today said it was a complex investigation and said it was not unusual for such cases to take a long time to be completed.

She said: “It will take a least another couple of months as is the usual procedure because it’s a difficult investigation.”

The explosion happened on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road on January 3.

Town centre roads and the Welsh Bridge were closed in the aftermath of the blast but traffic is now beginning to return to normal.
