Chaos on roads as the snow returns

Saturday 30th January 2010, 10:16AM GMT.

Snow fell again in Ketley Telford at about 2pm on Friday afternoon. An unexpected and brief snow storm caused chaos on the roads across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

There were a number of accidents after the sharp flurry of snow yesterday afternoon which settled on roads and froze over.

And weather experts today warned temperatures are expected to drop to -1C (30F) tonight and -4C (25F) tomorrow night.

Police said they were first called to a three-car collision in Shrewsbury at about 4pm yesterday, which saw the road closed during rush hour.

No-one is believed to have been seriously injured in the accident in Roman Road.

Another car was involved in an accident on the B4364 at Cleobury North just before 4.25pm.

Then shortly after 7pm, a car ended up in a ditch and another in the road after a collision on the A488 at Pontesbury.

A police spokesman said officers at the scene described the carriageway as being like “sheet glass”.

At about 11.25pm, a fire crew and police attended an accident involving one vehicle on the A49 at Longnor, Dorrington, near Shrewsbury.

No-one is thought to have been injured and one fire engine from Church Stretton attended the scene.

Police also had several calls about icy conditions on the A49 in the Church Stretton area and gritters are believed to have been out last night. There were also reports of treacherous driving conditions in Oswestry.

Unexpected??? Did these people not see it fall out of the sky??? Surely these idiots did, they just failed to adapt their driving. I mean come on people, you’ve had enough practice now with the last bout we had!!! Sort it out, or get off the road, as you are clearly not fit to drive!

@merc: I agree – fire the lot of them. Get some people in who give us snowstorms with advance warning, proper summers, and rain only on the weekday mornings (except bank holidays).

I like the fact that a Couple sho run a weather forcasting company in New Zealand from a dissused factory with very few resources and staff can give forcasting in the UK that miles more accurate at 5,000 th of the cost of the Met, Sack the lot of them they are not good value :(

I read the Star on Friday and on the front page it said,”Snow unexpectedly fell in Shrewsbury today despite weather reports predicting sunny intervals.”

Actually I had been following the Met Office forecasts this week and it said quite clearly, exactly what we got, “sunny intervals and possibility of Wintry showers.”

    let me have my say

I heard that the salt depot at park hall in oswestry is/was out of salt last night, and had to get supplies from wem, and as the road from oswestry to wem was bad, the first gritter back had used all its load to grit the road from wem, so when it got to oswestry, it then had to go back to refill. Great planning, can not say we did not expect it!!!!!!!

Would it help if drivers kitted out their cars for winter driving? Decent tyres, a shovel, snow chains… and tried using a bit of commonsense.
