Chippy rebuild facing refusal

Friday 29th January 2010, 2:40PM GMT.

The scene after the explosion at The Broseley Chippy (picture by Andrew Cunningham)A scheme to rebuild a fish and chip shop that was destroyed in an explosion in a Shropshire town centre looks set to be refused.

Planners are being advised to kick out the plans to redevelop the fast food outlet in Broseley High Street, which was reduced to a pile of rubble in the blast last year.

Parminda Sandhu has applied to rebuild the takeaway, but plans show that the size of the rear section of the building to be increased considerably. This, say officers, would dramatically affect the amenities of neighbouring residents and they are recommending refusal at a meeting on Tuesday.

A report states: “The design of the building is considered to be acceptable but it would adversely affect the amenity of neighbouring property. The proposed extract flue would adversely affect the character and appearance of the site and its surroundings in the conservation area.”

The proposal has also received objections from nearby residents and the Broseley conservation officer, although it has the support of the local town council.

Mr Sandhu, who was in India at the time of the explosion, and his wife Mandy have vowed to reopen the chippy in recognition of the support they have received from former customers.

The committee meets at Bridgnorth’s Westgate council offices at 2pm.

That doesnt make sense!!! The chippy would still be there if the explosion didnt have happened so why not re-build it?
