A renowned Shropshire building firm lost a court battle with a Mid Wales technology centre just days before it shut its doors, it emerged today.
Bosses at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, said it had been given a “significant” settlement this month following a dispute with Shrewsbury-based company Frank Galliers Ltd over work on a £5.4 million building project.
Galliers’ headquarters in Oxon Business Park has been locked up since Tuesday morning with work at its various development sites, including the £7 million Oswald Park leisure centre in Oswestry and the £1.3 million Bishop’s Castle Community Hospital in Bishop’s Castle also grinding to a halt.
Alex Randall, spokesman for CAT, today said an independent adjudicator was called in to the centre last year following a dispute with contractors Galliers over its WISE project at the site.
The scheme involved the creation of 24 en-suite study bedrooms, 200-seat rammed earth lecture theatre, workshops, seminar rooms, a laboratory, restaurant and a bar.
Mr Randall said: “Because of a dispute over incomplete and unsatisfactory work an independent adjudicator was called in and he awarded CAT a sum of money. His decision was upheld by the High Court this year.”
A statement on CAT’s website says that Galliers had not been involved with the WISE project since June and said it was being completed by other developers.
It also lists a number of “errors” it says were included in the description of the project on Galliers’ website.
Nobody has been available for comment from Galliers despite repeated attempts to contact the firm.
