Letter: Too much expected of the NHS
Thursday 28th January 2010, 7:55AM GMT.
Letter: I am writing in reply to the letter headlined “Not getting the best care with NHS”.
This letter interested me as I have an elderly mother- in-law with the same problem (atrial fibrillation).
She has just spent a number of weeks in The Princess Royal Hospital following a heart attack.
She is 88 years old and we were told that her age would not discriminate her against for any medical treatment under the NHS and she would be treated for the condition irrespective of age.
She was operated on and received excellent care while in hospital and has since recovered fully.
Regarding medication “tick prescription regime”, yes, this system is widespread in GP surgeries, but not without back-up. I use this system for myself and family who attend different GP surgeries, but on all the prescriptions a “review date” is printed on the bottom. I would have thought it is up to the patient to follow up the reviews.
Too much is expected of the NHS. Care is available for everyone in this country without having to pay and people are too quick to criticise the system, it is a two-way thing, and sometimes you have to help yourself.

I am glad the writer has had a good experience with the NHS. Unfortunately my own experience, with three family members in hospital in the last three years has not been as good.
