Blast victim says online support ‘kept her going’
Thursday 28th January 2010, 4:12PM GMT.
One of the victims of the Shrewsbury blast has told how hundreds of messages from friends posted online kept her going as she recovered in hospital.
Annie Davies was one of five people seriously injured when a blast ripped through a first floor flat at the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road.
Back in Shrewsbury today after leaving Selly Oak Hospital, in Birmingham, the 19-year-old said she was glad to be home after she was allowed out on weekend leave before being discharged this week.
She said: “I’m feeling pretty good, I’m back home and doing well.
“I’m walking by myself, it’s amazing to be out of hospital.
“It was difficult at the weekend because I couldn’t go out or do things easily which was frustrating.”
She said her dad John printed off messages from a support group set up on Facebook and brought them to her in hospital while she recovered.
“The messages on Facebook kept me going,” she said.
“My dad brought them to the hospital every day and they really helped me get through it.”
The support group was joined by 2,465 people, many of whom also joined a group called The Bridge Street Fund, which was set up to raise money for Annie and the other four victims – Scott Godbold, Sarah Pearse, Sam Devine-Turner and Theatre Severn panto star Kiley McDonnell.
Today Sam and Scott are also recovering at their parents’ homes in Shrewsbury while Kiley and Sarah, who is at Selly Oak, both remain in hospital where their condition is “stable”.
Annie said she wanted to thank everyone who had raised money for the fund.
