Tipper truck lands in ditch

Wednesday 27th January 2010, 11:21AM GMT.

A lorry overturned and slid into a ditch on a Shropshire road after the driver said he had to take evasive action to avoid a crash with an overtaking vehicle.

The crash happened on the B5062, between Haughmond Hill and Shrewsbury, near Shrewsbury Rugby Club.

The white, tipper truck was being driven on behalf of an aggregate company that supplies to the building industry. The driver escaped uninjured.

A spokesman from Bardon Aggregates, which the lorry was contracted to, said: “One of our lorries had to take action to avoid an oncoming collision with an overtaking vehicle on the opposite side of the road. Fortunately no-one was hurt in the incident but the lorry, which was carrying asphalt, left the road. We are now working to recover it.”

Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: “Police were called at just after 9.30am to reports that a lorry had overturned and ended up in a ditch on the B5062 near Uffington.”

“We have received reports of a car overtaking the lorry in the moments before the incident and we are appealing to anyone who saw the car or the incident to contact us on 0300 3333000.”

A spokeswoman from West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We sent a rapid response vehicle at just after 9.40am after reports a lorry had gone into a ditch.”

The driver, a man thought to be in his 20s, was travelling from Haughmond Hill Quarry.
