Measures to improve path hit by robbers

Wednesday 27th January 2010, 11:24AM GMT.

Detectives are working with council officials to make a Telford footpath where a number of vulnerable people have been attacked and robbed a less vulnerable place for walkers.

Police believe a gang is responsible for the series of robberies on the footpath leading from Wrekin College to Whitchurch Drive.

Improvements are now planned which could including cutting back bushes and putting up additional lighting.

The gang of robbers has been swooping between 7pm and 8pm and taking items such as mobile phones and cash.

Police today revealed a fifth victim, aged 20, had now come forward saying he was approached by a gang of five youths on January 10 who hit him and demanded he hand over property.

The man said he was walking with a friend when the gang, one of whom was Asian with dark hair and a blond streak, came up to him and assaulted him.

Police are investigating whether the incident is linked.

Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said today they were planning to contact the council about the footpath. He added police patrols had also been increased in the area.

Wellington deputy mayor Graham Riley, whose ward covers the area, said he was pleased police patrols had been increased.
