Doubt over future of county building firm
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 7:59PM GMT.
Frank Galliers Ltd is one of Shropshire’s most long established building firms, having started life 45 years ago as a family business.
But the future of the firm was in doubt today amid rumours it has gone into administration.
Nobody from the company has been available for comment despite numerous phone calls and visits to its head office, which is located on Shrewsbury’s Oxon Business Park.
Frank Galliers employs 138 people and the company has carried out numerous projects across Shropshire, the West Midlands and Wales, including health care, leisure and education developments.
It has been responsible for major schemes such as the £10 million development of the Guildhall council offices in Shrewsbury in 2004.
The family business became part of Pan-Atlanta Developments Ltd when it was sold that year for an undisclosed amount. At the time it had an annual turnover of £25 million.
In September bosses said that its trusted name had been reinforced after it was cleared of any involvement in “bid-rigging”.
More than 100 construction firms were fined £129.5 million after an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading concerning artificially inflated bids submitted for major building contracts.
But nine construction firms, including Frank Galliers, were told by the OFT that it would not be pursuing allegations against them.
Galliers also has an in-house joinery business called Oxon Joinery.
It is used primarily for contracts but is also in demand commercially for bespoke products due to the high level of professionalism and skill within the workshop.
The company is currently involved in a number of high-profile schemes including the £7 million leisure centre development at Oswald Park in Oswestry, a £1.3 million redevelopment of Bishop’s Castle Community Hospital, and a £600,000 refurbishment of Market Drayton’s Market Hall.
Laura Rowley, director of resources at Shropshire Council, which commissioned Galliers to build the Oswestry leisure centre, today said the authority had been informed that Galliers had gone into administration but is still yet to receive any official confirmation.
According to Galliers’ website works to the new Oswestry leisure centre are “progressing well”.
Galliers was also working on two major schemes for Shropshire County PCT, including the community hospital redevelopment and a £400,000 refurbishment of the Whitehall Walk-in Medical Practice in Shrewsbury.
Both Shropshire Council and the PCT today said they wanted to see the projects through to completion.
