A rise in VAT profits from petrol could be diverted to repair all the potholes in the UK within 100 days, the AA said today.

The average price at the pumps is currently more than 112p per litre compared with the typical £1 at this time of year, the group said. This equates to an extra 1.8p in VAT per litre, which if pumped into repairing potholes would see Britain’s roads smoothed over in three or four months.

Complaints about potholes in Shropshire are on the rise, particularly after ice from the big freeze receded and opened up cracks in the roads in many areas.

Potholes caused by freezing weather are going to be very costly to repair, Shropshire Council cabinet members have been warned.

Everyone who drives a car, truck or motorcycle pays for a “road fund license” as the name implies it is a tax “fund” to pay for the construction and maintanance of roads.
We all know thats not where the money ends up but maybe it’s time to get back to basics and put the money where it was originally intended.
VAT that was introduced when we joined the “Common market” better known these days as the EEC to pay for ivory towers and money for our so call elected MEP’s to splash around.

And here is me thinking that my Road Fund Licence, helped maintain the roads. Once again the motorist is conned by this and previous governments.
