Witness for the Prosecution
Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury
Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution stars Robert Duncan, Dennis Lill and Ben Nealon. Picture by Richard H. Smith
A classic whodunit from the 1950s kept audiences guessing last night.
Agatha Christie’s courtroom drama contained all of the usual elements that of a good crime story with mixed motives, double bluffs and plenty of red herrings.

Honeysuckle Weeks is among the cast. Picture by Richard H. Smith
The action takes place at a QC’s chambers and a court at the Old Bailey as a solicitor and barrister work to prove the innocence of their client Leonard Vole.
The case centres on the murder of a wealthy elderly lady and sees witnesses take to the stand to be questioned over a capital offence.
The play, produced by The Agatha Christie Theatre Co- mpany, highlights Christie’s dry wit, which shows up the views of the day including xenophobia and sexism.
Strong leads were played by Honeysuckle Weeks as Leonard’s German wife and Jennifer Wilson as Janet McKenzie, a forthright housekeeper.
The costumes and set were perfect for evoking the time and the feel of a courtroom – certainly worth braving a cold winter’s night for.
