Public to have say on theatre parking plan

Tuesday 26th January 2010, 8:28AM GMT.

theatreProposals to introduce double yellow lines outside Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn in a bid to prevent traffic problems are set to go out to public consultation in the next few months.

A taxi rank is also proposed for the opposite side of the road close to the Anchor Pub in Frankwell which will result in the loss of several short-stay spaces.

Councillor Andrew Wagner, Shrewsbury Town Council ward member for Quarry and Coton Hill, said people using the Frankwell car parks often faced major delays to get out following performances because of motorists stopping outside the venue to pick up theatre-goers.

He said he hoped new double yellow lines could help solve the problem.

A Shropshire Council spokesman said: “We consulted with Shrewsbury Town Council in August on proposals to introduce a no waiting/ no loading restriction outside Theatre Severn.

“We will be going out to consultation in the next few months on the proposals. If implemented we hope these restrictions will reduce traffic congestion out of Frankwell Car Park by keeping the two traffic lanes clear. This should also aid accessibility for emergency vehicles in the area.

“We are also looking into proposals to introduce a taxi rank into the area, this will be subject to a full consultation this year.”

There also needs to be provision for those people who are crossing the road. A recessed pavement isn’t any good if people park across it and if there isn’t a crossing. When I went there the other night (very enjoyable by the way) people were having to cross over the road via the mini roundabout. Not very safe at all.
