The future of a north Shropshire delivery office remained hanging in the balance today with postal chiefs staying tight-lipped about its long-term prospects.

Royal Mail bosses today said it was “business as usual” for Wem Delivery Office and that no decision has been taken about relocating it to Shrewsbury.

The future of Wem’s sorting office has hung in the balance since Royal Mail confirmed a feasibility study into the transfer of work from Wem to Shrewsbury had taken place.

Councillor Peggy Carson said she had been bombarded with complaints from residents about post arriving as late as 2pm in parts of town.

But today Sue Dakin, Royal Mail spokeswoman, said: “No decision has been made about the relocation of Wem Delivery Office and we would reassure customers that it is ‘business as usual’ in relation to their local services.

“In a highly competitive postal market we need to constantly monitor and review our operations to ensure we can provide a high quality service at a value for money price.”

Last year, the operator shut its sorting offices in Ellesmere and Church Stretton, merging them with others in Oswestry and Craven Arms.

Councillor Chris Mellings had called on Royal Mail chiefs to come and meet the council to discuss the outcome of the feasibility study.

Town clerk Jane Drummond today said the operator had agreed to attend a future town council meeting but no date had been arranged because of service disruption during strike action. She said she was hopeful a meeting could be arranged soon.
