Start date for work on road
Monday 25th January 2010, 12:01PM GMT.
Work on a £1.4 million improvement scheme for one of Shropshire’s busiest road junctions, near to where a teenage cyclist died, will begin in April.
Council transport officials have unveiled plans for new measures on the road where 14-year-old Ben Somers lost his life in October 2008, near to the Harlescott crossroads in Shrewsbury.
Today, Hugh Dannatt from Shropshire Council, said the work was expected to be finished by the end of August.
But he said a separate scheme for the West End of the town, including Barker Street, which was due to move forward this year will now not take place until next year.
Mr Dannatt said the Harlescott crossroads work would include resurfacing around the area, improvements to the left slip road, from Whitchurch Road to Harlescott Lane, and impr-oved pedestrian facilities including a new crossing.
It will also see Harlescott Lane resurfaced, cycling and other pedestrian facilities and improvements to the Brixton Way roundabout.
Of the West End scheme, Mr Dannatt said: “We’re reviewing the scheme at the moment and it’s more likely works would take place in 2011.”
