No headstone for Great Escaper
Monday 25th January 2010, 9:19AM GMT.
Shropshire’s “Great Escape” hero Jimmy James – whose heroic deeds in evading his Nazi captors were portrayed in the Hollywood film – was buried without a gravestone, it was revealed today.
Mr James, who lived near Ludlow, was buried with full military honours two years ago at Ludlow Cemetery after a funeral at St Peter’s Church, in the town.
However, today Ludlow Mayor Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith revealed that Mr James had been buried without a headstone.
Mr James’ wife, Madge, who died last year, was also buried in the Ludlow Town Council graveyard without a formal stone.
Today Councillor Taylor-Smith said he had intervened and was working with the RAF Association to ensure Mr James and his wife were correctly remembered.
Squadron Leader Jimmy James was awarded the Military Cross for his part in the escape from Stalag Luft prisoner-of-war camp during World War Two. His exploits inspired the hit film The Great Escape.
Councillor Taylor-Smith said: “I have been working with the RAF Association to get a suitable gravestone for both Jimmy and his wife. I have also spoken to the council’s direct labour force and they are under strict instructions from me to ensure that both graves are appropriately cared for.”

Jimmy’s wife died on November 10th last and she now shares the grave with him. Following her interment, several people have been active in moves towards an appropriate headstone. There are slight legal complications and naturally consultation regarding the actual stone is important. Anyone who knew Jimmy would know that he would be embarrassed by such a fuss. However, the RAF, his closest relatives and all those who loved and respected him will ensure that his burial place is marked with a fitting tribute. It is disappointing that someone seems to be attempting to gain some sensationalised mileage from the situation.
