istant view of the COD Donnington fire of April 25, 1988.

A huge pall of smoke rises into the sky from COD Donnington on April 25, 1988, the second major blaze there in the 1980s.
The cause was never determined for certain.

Happily there were no casualties, but the financial cost was enormous at more than £150 million.

It always makes me sad to think of this pub having to be demolished. I was not born for a long time after it was replaced but I can’t help thinking what a landmark this would have been if it was still standing today. The replacement is not bad but could never match the original! At least the demolition was not the planners’ faults as was typical of the times…

the photo of the midland red bus is most interesting as i have a collection of 1950′s m/red buses taken mostly in town and at ditherington.
what interests me is the jumbo type wrecker and i wonder if it is an aec matador inside a midland red body and was it part of the bus fleet at ditherington and does anyone know the fleet number and reg. number please
