Theatre traffic targeted by council
Friday 22nd January 2010, 11:16AM GMT.
Double yellow lines could soon be painted outside Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn in a bid to end a traffic “nightmare” at the venue.
A new taxi rank is also proposed for the opposite side of the road, close to the Anchor Pub in Frankwell, which will result in the loss of several short-stay parking spaces.
The planned waiting restrictions have been drawn up by Shropshire Council and were discussed by members of the town council this week.
Councillor Andrew Wagner said people using the Frankwell car parks often faced delays following shows because of motorists stopping outside the venue to pick up theatre-goers.
He said: “The plans were originally to put a taxi rank outside the front doors of the theatre.
“We said no to that and advised them to put it on the other side because otherwise it would be blocking a lane of traffic at the traffic lights.
“When it’s busy it’s an absolute nightmare so what we have asked for is to have double yellow lines and no parking there at all.
“They will go from the traffic lights where Cafe Frank is all the way round to the boat yard.”
Councillor Wagner said he believed some people would still try and flout the law and claimed it may be necessary for increased traffic warden patrols at certain times.
He said the taxi rank would be situated outside the Anchor resulting in the loss of two or three 45 minute short-stay spaces.
