Driver confusion over route closure

Land-slide near Worfield.

Motorists are going round the bend after workers failed to remove Road Closed signs six days after a Shropshire road was cleared following a landslip.

Traffic bulletins were still stating that the rural route was blocked yesterday even though there had been no major problems since the area was cleared within a day of the landslip last Friday.

And closure and diversion signs yesterday remained in place on the B4176 between Worfield and Chesterton despite the emergency services saying they had no record of the road closure and villagers and staff at a nearby care home claiming the route had been cleared.

Engineers are still working on the site to fix broken power and telephone lines and the diversion signs remain in place to make sure the road is safe for drivers.

But traffic is now managing to flow without major disruption despite the road closure warning.

Land from an adjoining field brought down a telegraph pole at the side of the road during a spell of heavy rain at the peak of last week’s big thaw and the route was closed for a time as debris and the obstruction were cleared.

However, motorists are still forced to negotiate barriers designed to stop traffic from using the route, which links the villages with the main A454 Bridgnorth to Wolverhampton road.

Staff at the nearby Bradeney House Care Home have been hampered from accessing the premises because of the failure to remove the barriers cluttering the road.

A spokeswoman for the care home said the workmen had dug a hole for themselves by forgetting to remove the barriers. “The landslide almost brought down the telegraph pole, but this was soon cleared up and traffic was using the road again. It definitely does not look to be closed,” she said.

“It took about a day to clear up the mess, but traffic has been moving normally since then. Drivers just have to negotiate the bits left behind.”

Shropshire Council officials claim work is still being done at the site of the spillage and the road will reopen fully as soon as that is finished.

Brian Bennett, Shropshire Council’s highways manager for South Shropshire, said: “We will be visiting the site to see how we can alleviate any concerns with the bollards, whilst ensuring the safety of road users.

“We would like to re-assure people that we are working to completely reopen the road as soon as possible. We are in contact with power firm E.On which needs to re-instate the electricity pole.

“Once this is completed we can reopen the road,” said Mr Bennett.
