Shropshire Star reader Gary Jones reached for his mobile phone camera when he spotted something unusual in the sky over Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, on Sunday, January 17.

Mr Jones estimates the bright, flashing object was around 1,500 metres away when he spotted it at 6pm.

It’s similar to a number of mysterious objects spotted in the county over the past few months. Take a look at the video and see what you think.

To put things in perspective I would just like to add that Chinese lanterns are usually about 1 meter sqr. These were about the size of a large family car. What you cannot see is a second one further off moving in parallel with the one on camera. I thought that it was 2 airships moving together but they had no navigation lights but I am open to explanations.

At 1500metres and at night when all u can see is a flame – how on earth can it be compared to a car. It’s quite obvu=iously a lantern. Not an airship (or 2 airships – though why u didnt film the other one as well beats me). And all on a mobile phone.

Read a good story today about Buckfast Tonic Wine being popular in Scotland – seems it might have a few fans here too!

    Happy New Year! Hic!

Surely the answer is they are UFO’s?UNIDENTIFIED Flying Objects
Nobody is saying that they are from another planetary life source, just that they are unidentified.

You Earthlings are so stupid at times.

So let me hazard a guess at how this story will pan out.

Some self-declared ‘UFO expert’ will examine the footage, and quickly declare that it is a visit by extra-terrestrials (watch the skies everyone – they’re coming!)

Subsequently, another such expert will assure us that he has contacted Shawbury and they have confirmed that there were no flights in the area on that night – stranger still, dear readers (especially as we all know that military establishments will happily reveal all of their operational data to any Tom, Dick or raving looney who happens to pick up the phone!)

So what are all these alien visitors doing visiting rural Shropshire, but never seeming to land? A little inter-galactic ‘dogging’ perhaps?

But seriously Mr Editor – it must be clear to most readers by now that there is someone on your staff indulging in their hobby via your pages.

Just as we don’t need Shirley Tart’s royal obsequiousness constantly shoved down our throats, we don’t need this stuff either. More news please…

I think the answer is in the headline,a U-F-O is an unidentified flying object, anything that is flying that cannot be otherwise explained must surely be unidentified. It doesn’t mean that there are aliens from another cosmos, just that it hasn’t been identified.

    Andrew,

I’m well aware of the archive news link thanks.

If you do a search within your own archive, and go back as far as the beginning of 2008, you’ll find that this topic is covered in 50 or so articles. Surely proprtionately far too many for such a minority interest?

great to see others reporting sightings, althought its sad to see that our usual suspects…(peter) are again quick to critisize findings.
what you saw is being looked at and to be honest no one really bothers with contacting shawbury anymore because they are briefed to give the same response time and time again.
all i would say is this: if this was a chinese lantern, why was it moving in the opposite direction to the wind??? chinese lanterns move with the wind…
    enough said, keep watching folks.

i too saw the bright white and yellow light in the sky on the same evening as was reported at around 7 oclock over my home in oswestry.i was speaking to a friend on the phone by my back room window, saw an airliner flying northward, i told my friend about and as i did so this very bright light suddenly appeared from nowhere passes over the roof towards the east,i told my friend about it thinking it might be a helicopter but did not hear an engine which was rather strange because it passed right over my chimney and there was no sound passing down it.i would have gone out to the front of the house to see why but i was still conversing with my friend.so if shawbury say there was no low levelflying that night, what was it?
