Town freeman tradition saved

Thursday 21st January 2010, 9:33AM GMT.

The tradition of recognising people who have made an outstanding contribution to Oswestry life by awarding them the title of honorary freeman has been saved.

The former Oswestry Borough Council gave out the honour until it became defunct last year when the unitary Shropshire Council was established.

It was feared the tradition would be lost with the changing of the authority, but Oswestry Town Council is to take on the responsibility.

Councillor Martin Bennett tabled a motion at the authority’s full council meeting to save the tradition.

His motion called for Oswestry Town Council to request delegated power from Shropshire Council to appoint honorary freeman of Oswestry.

Mr Bennett said today: “It is important to the town that people who give exceptional service to the community are recognised for their efforts.”
