Telford urged to produce goods

Thursday 21st January 2010, 10:53AM GMT.

Assistant manager Larry Chambers is calling for struggling AFC Telford United to dig deep and pull out a “dogs of war” performance.

The Bucks head to Blue Square North title contenders Southport on Saturday, scene of a memorable FA Trophy victory last season – where they won despite having Lee Vaughan sent off before half-time.

The display that night oozed character, in sharp contrast with the depressing 2-0 defeat they suffered at Stafford Rangers on Tuesday evening.

No 2 Chambers will be in the stands at Haig Avenue as he completes a two-game touchline ban imposed after he was sent to the stands in the Trophy tie with Blyth earlier in the season.

But he wants his side to recall what they did last season at the same venue and use it as inspiration.

“We need a dogs of war performance like we had that night,” said Chambers.

“It was a tough game, we were down to 10 men and all the odds were against us, but we put in a massive performance.

“We need to replicate what we did that night because, on the back of Tuesday, we need a massive improvement. I know those players have got a big performance in them.”

Meanwhile, skipper Stuart Whitehead is struggling with a slight hamstring strain he picked up at Marston Road, and that will make him a doubt for the trip to Southport.

But Andy Brown will return from suspension, while Liam Blakeman could also be back in the frame.
