MP: Give students lower theatre rates

Thursday 21st January 2010, 10:00AM GMT.

theatre-severn-topShrewsbury’s MP is calling for reduced rates at the council-run Theatre Severn so that students are not priced out of the venue.

Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, said he hoped that Shropshire Council would agree to rent rehearsal space out to students of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College so that they could make good use of the facilities to help them along with their studies.

Mr Kawczynski said: “I’m very keen for sixth form staff to work closely with the council over their development.

“With the Learning and Skills Council being wound up a lot of responsibility is being handed to the local authority.

“Students at the college can study music, dance and dramatics but they can’t afford to hire the rooms in the Theatre Severn.

“I’ve asked the council to undertake an evaluation of the utilisation of facilities to see if their is a possibility in any way to put college students in at a low rate so they can utilise resources so classes can use them. It’s vital for their education.”

Mr Kawczynski said he was present at a meeting last Friday between college bosses and council staff aimed at encouraging the two groups to work more closely together.

Martin Ward, headteacher of the college, said: “Obviously the theatre has to charge for use of its facilities. We do rent the theatre for some of our shows but significant use is too costly for us.

“We want to meet with the new manager to see if we can come to an agreement to allow some access to the theatre, when they’re not busy, at a low rate.

“We want to see whether there can be a special rate for fairly intensive use.”

Peter Nicholson, theatre services manager, said: “We are meeting with Shrewsbury Sixth Form College later this week to discuss their possible future use of the facilities. No decisions have yet been taken but it is important that the theatre is used as widely as possible by the local community.”

What’s the point when the theatre only programmes for over 60s? There’s a ridiculous lack of contemporary music for instance. I’ve only been once (in early 2009 to see The Lord Of The Flies) – and looking at the current programme, I won’t be coming again for a long time. Wake up Theatre Severn and start hosting some contemporary productions/gigs!!!

Ah i forgot that most of the programme was aimed at over 60′s. Must have been the numerous shows that arent that caused my memory lapse. There is a gig on there on Saturday night for goodness sake. Im sure all the seniors will be turning out for that.

Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, winners of the BBC’s World Music Award…are you kidding me!!! Lol! Maybe I should have been clearer – contemporary POPULAR music, you know like numerous other venues around the country host. Why can’t the theatre have a few acts like that instead of The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, Buddy Holly and the Cricketers and Jane Macdonald…zzzzzzzzzzz.

Giving subsidies is a very tricky business, just ask yourself when does it become discrimination?
I am out of work but unable to get government money because my savings are too large to entitle me to JSA( I did not waste my money on booze or cigarettes ,I saved) , I’m too young to get a pension and I am not disabled, what help is there for me?

Truth Truth what where you thinking??? If you want gig after gig after gig maybe you need to look at a music venue not a theatre that has to appeal to all different age groups. And lets be honest Shrewsbury’s music venue history is not that great what with the Great “Buttermarket” if you want a music venue then ask for one but you cant blame a theatre that’s is there to host a wide range of lets face it shows! (Drama, Dance, Music, Comedy and lectures) all of which are meet.
