Bid to build first phase of massive housing site
Thursday 21st January 2010, 6:00PM GMT.
Plans for the first phase of a massive 1,000-home development on the site of a Shropshire quarry have been recommended for council approval.
Persimmon Homes has applied to Telford & Wrekin Council to build 170 homes on land at Hadley Quarry.
The developers say the aim is to create a community on the 80-acre site between Hadley Road, Sommerfield Road and the railway line used by Blockleys Bricks of Telford.
The news comes after plans were revealed yesterday for 550 homes, a hotel and offices on a disused factory site in Priorslee.
The quarry in Hadley is used by Blockleys to extract clay and the site is to be developed in phases.
Concerns were raised by members of Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council about extra traffic.
Members were worried that if approved nearby Church Street would be used by too many vehicles.
But despite that, Telford & Wrekin Council planning officers have recommended giving the project the go-ahead.
A final decision will be made by the authority’s plans board when it meets on Wednesday at 6pm.
A report due to go before the board says: “Officers believe that the planning balancing exercise is heavily influenced by the very positive regeneration elements of the proposal and the opportunities to develop this brownfield site, itself located in a highly sustainable location.”
Persimmon Homes West Midlands managing director Dominic Harman said: “We feel Hadley Quarry is an excellent area for development and look forward to creating a new community.”
