Snow returns
Wednesday 20th January 2010, 11:45AM GMT.

Snow on the main road between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.
Heavy snow swept across parts of Shropshire and Mid Wales today causing treacherous conditions for rush hour drivers and leading to a landslide.
Lorries became stuck and cars struggled in the icy conditions with heavy snow expected to fall across the region throughout the day. And the combination of snow and heavy rain in some parts of the county was putting pressure on already swollen rivers.
Engineers were called to the landslip on Burway Road in Church Stretton at about 5am.
A Shropshire Council spokesman said the road had not yet been cleared, but had previously been closed to traffic due to snow and ice.
The spokesman said: “We are liaising with the National Trust as to the impact of the landslip.”
David Cowell, National Trust area warden for Carding Mill Valley said about 2ft of snow mixed with some soil had blocked the road.
Ludlow Police said they had received reports of a lorry stuck on the A4117 between Clee Hill and Cleobury Mortimer causing problems for traffic.
Shropshire councillor Peter Phillips reported that six cars had become stuck on Cathercott Hill, between Norbury and Shrewsbury.
Jane Bywater, of Knighton, said: “I would urge motorists to take extra care when travelling, I saw a lot of them going quite fast earlier today, I was only doing 20mph near the school and my car started to slide.”
Powys County Council said one minor road between Staylittle and Machynlleth at Dylife remained closed because of snow and ice today.
In Shrewsbury, both Gravel Hill Lane, near the West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury, and Chilton Farm Lane in Atcham, near Shrewsbury, were closed due to flooding.
The Frankwell Main Car Park in Shrewsbury has now reopened while the Riverside Car Park has been partially reopened. People can also use the council’s webcams to view the car park.
All other surface car parks in Shrewsbury remain open and the park and ride sites will also continue to operate.
The snow is expected to die out tonight with heavy rain for the next 24 hours and sleet over the hills.

“…Arctic weather seen earlier this month.”
What Arctic weather? What we had last week was ordinary winter weather during my childhood in Shropshire.
To experience proper Arctic weather, may I suggest your journalist with a taste for hyperbole visits Barrow in Alaska. Today’s weather forecast there is for a daytime temperature of -38C and a wind chill factor of -52C.

Fair point.

It was claimed that last week the temperature in one place in Oxfordshire was colder, in fact, than in the Arctic.

In that case, I withdraw my earlier comment and will spend the rest of the day looking smug.
