Calverhall bowls row rumbles on

Wednesday 20th January 2010, 10:19AM GMT.

The Calverhall cloud hovering over Shropshire bowls refuses to go away.

Whitchurch League clubs remain upset with the way the Calverhall case has been handled – and expressed their anger in a debate that dominated the league’s AGM last night.

The village club were fined £250 and had two players banned by the county association after running an open competition without permission.

An appeal to the British governing body resulted in the punishment being declared excessive, the fine cut to just £25 and the suspension of chairman Alan Ratcliffe lifted.

But Whitchurch clubs want the fine withdrawn completely after what one delegate described as a “monumental cock up” on the county’s part, and the banning of John Wynn – who did not appeal – removed.

And president Peter Williams promised the league’s executive would consider calls to petition the county association along those lines at its next meeting.
