Bridge to open as repairs finished

A Shropshire bridge, which has been closed for three months leading to misery for villagers, will finally open on Friday – five days later than planned.
Shropshire Council contractors had been unable to complete work on Fitz Bridge, which was damaged on October 14 following a collision, due to the big freeze.
The bridge, between Montford Bridge and Leaton, near Shrewsbury, had been struck by a large vehicle and was closed to traffic.
Repair work started on December 1 and it was originally hoped the bridge would reopen by Christmas, but first high water levels on the River Perry and then freezing temperatures preventing mortar from setting, delaying the project.
Shropshire Council put up a roadblock to stop motorists using the narrow lane through Mytton as an alternative route following complaints from residents.
Council spokeswoman Laura Owen said at the start of the month that contractors Enterprise, working with sub-contractors, had designed a tent to cover the bridge so that repair work could proceed.
John Williams, Shropshire Council’s team leader for structures, said: “We still need to take the tent down which enabled the work to continue in the very cold weather. We hope to reopen the road on Friday following the removal of the tent.
“We will of course do everything we can to reopen the road as soon as possible.”

The so-called “misery” is only inconvenience, for goodness sake! What a non-story. The contractors couldn’t do the work any sooner because of the weather yet no-one says ‘thank you’ that people worked in cold, wet Winter conditions to get the job done properly.
