More funds for victims

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the Shrewsbury explosion as Shropshire residents continue to organise fundraising events to support those most seriously injured in the blast.
The Health and Safety Executive said work is continuing off site over the coming weeks to try and discover what caused the suspected gas leak which saw flames rip through a first floor flat injuring 12 people and damaging town centre buildings.
Today three of those most seriously injured remain in hospital while two more recover at home after being discharged from Selly Oak Hospital, in Birmingham at the weekend. Scott Godbold, 23, and Sam Devine-Turner, 19, are recovering at their families homes.
Yesterday Scott spoke of his “miracle” escape from the flat.
Annie Davies and Sarah Pearse, both 19, remain at Selly Oak where Sarah is critical but stable and Annie is comfortable.
Kiley McDonnell, one of the stars of Theatre Severn’s Peter Pan, suffered spinal injuries in the blast and is still being treated at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
To support the victims a Shropshire motorcycle legend night which raises thousands of pounds for charity is to donate a percentage of the money raised to a fund set up to help them.
The night at the Wynnstay Hotel in Oswestry on February 5 was sold out within three weeks of the tickets going on sale.
But an auction of motorcycling memorabilia before the main event – a speakers’ event with the appearance of two motorcycling legends, will be open to anyone whether or not they have a ticket. For details visit www.roadracinglegends.org
A Shropshire supermarket where Scott worked has also pledged support by donating a hi-fi worth over £100 to a charity auction.
Staff at Sainsbury’s, in Meole Brace, in Shrewsbury, said they wanted to do something to help because Scott worked at the store for three years from 2004 to 2007.
The hi-fi will be auctioned at a charity night organised by Paul Bailey, landlord of the Yorkshire House pub, in St Mary’s Place, with the support of Mike Philbin, owner of the Severn Warehouse and Cellars, the former Buttermarket nightclub, in Howard Street.
The event will take place at the nightclub on January 30. Tickets costing £5 each are available from the pub by calling (01743) 362622.
