Flood warnings as more snow forecast

Tuesday 19th January 2010, 10:46AM GMT.

Parts of the West Midlands, including Shropshire, were under water today after heavy rain and melting snow caused the River Severn to swell and led to flooding across the region.

Environment Agency officials said that they were constantly monitoring the situation as more heavy rain is expected over the next few days. This is in addition to heavy snow which is expected to hit some areas overnight.

Flood warnings were in place along two stretches of the River Severn, including the area between Worcester and Tewkesbury and a stretch from Tewkesbury to just upstream of Gloucester.

And it was Worcestershire and Gloucestershire which were the worst hit areas with Worcester County Cricket Club’s ground and parts of Tewkesbury flooded.

Across Shropshire, the county has so far escaped the worst of the flooding, although areas such as Leighton, between Shrewsbury and Telford, were badly flooded.

In the Shrewsbury area, a number of roads have reopened after they were closed including Sydney Avenue, Castlefields and the road between Cross Houses and Atcham.

The Frankwell Main Car Park in Shrewsbury has also reopened.

Frankwell Riverside Car Park has been partially reopened, although officials from the Environment Agency are still occupying the area.

However, Chilton Farm Lane in Atcham and Gravel Hill Lane, near the West Mid Showground, in Shrewsbury, were both closed off today.

Sharon Robinson, a spokeswoman for the Environment Agency, said that the situation was being constantly monitored, but she said that so far there had been no reports of any properties being affected by flooding.

She said: “We’re not aware of any properties flooding but there would be quite a lot of low lying land around the rivers and roads.

“The River Severn between Worcester and Gloucester is where our last flood warnings are in place.

“There has been a fair amount of rain, combined with the snow melting with the other river courses feeding in as well.”

She added: “It does depend on how much rain does come but we are watching closely and will be issuing any warnings if and when they are needed.”

Thank god the Shropshire star has seen sense. A weather article without the words “Shropshire weatherman John Warner……”. I actually believe this article now.
