Town hit the high road

David Hibbert of Shrewsbury Town chases Richard Jackson of Burton AlbionDespite a slow start to the January transfer window Town continue to impress on the road in the league, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

The 1-1 draw with Burton may have felt like two points dropped as we failed to take advantage of playing against 10 men – not for the first time this season. However, there were lots of positives to take from the game, including the performance of debutant Danny Taylor at right back and the fact we have gone four games unbeaten.

Worrying news from the game was that of the hamstring injury picked up by skipper Graham Coughlan and with a possible long lay-off on the cards it further illustrates the need to strengthen the squad.

With the good news that Town managed to find a club who were willing to take flop Nathan Elder off our hands, it means we can now look to bring in players that will improve the side.

However, my fear is that there is a genuine lack of decent players around who clubs are willing to let go at such an important point in the season. The type of players that are available are young and inexperienced ones or those that can’t get into their teams’ starting line-up.

By now I would have expected us to have been linked with numerous players, but so far it has been far too quiet for my liking and time is running out!

Who would fans like us to sign?

Some sad news was revealed last week that defender Michael Jackson has been forced to retire due to injury. Despite being injured for a long time and missing so many games for the club, in the matches he did feature we saw what a good player he was and we have certainly missed cover at the back for Langmead and Coughlan.

A manager takes a risk when signing a player coming towards the end of his career, especially when they suffer an injury which can often be serious and mean they can’t play again. However, on occasion it pays off and we have seen with players like Coughlan that experience can count for a lot.

Next up for Town is a home game against Dagenham Redbridge who are still in the promotion hunt despite their indifferent form of late.

Dagenham are a lot better team at home than they are away and Town should take some confidence from this. However, I get the feeling they are still aggrieved at missing out on the play-offs last season because us and will be seeking revenge like they did when they thrashed us away.

A recent article in the Shropshire Star revealed Town’s team of the last 10 years which included: Joe Hart, Darren Moss, David Hughes, Graham Coughlan, Marc Tierney, Dave Edwards, Stuart Drummond, Ben Davies, Nigel Jemson, Luke Rodgers, Grant Holt.

I would have to put my support behind this team, but what do fans think?
