Men, 21, ‘lucky to escape’ from fire

Two 21-year-old men had an “extremely lucky” escape after faulty wiring caused a fire at a Shropshire home this morning.

The men managed to get out of the house after alerting the fire brigade to the blaze at Mount Pleasant in Ketley, Telford, just before 4am.

Twelve firefighters tackled the fire in one of the first floor bedrooms at the detached house and were there for almost two hours bringing it under control and damping down.

Crews from Telford Central and Wellington fire stations attended, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury fire station.

The two men were unhurt.

Telford Central fire station watch manager Tony Druce said: “There were smoke alarms in the house but we don’t know if they were working or not.

“But there were definitely no smoke alarms on the first floor of the property and we would urge people to make sure they have smoke alarms installed on every floor of their house.

“These two men were extremely lucky to get out bearing in mind the time in the morning the fire was.”

Mr Druce said there was fire and smoke damage to the house as a result of the blaze, which investigations have revealed was caused by faulty wiring in the bedroom.
