Kevin to make his debut for Telford

Monday 18th January 2010, 10:02AM GMT.

Former Wolves midfielder Kevin O’Connor is set to sign non-contract terms with AFC Telford United – and is in line for a debut at Stafford Rangers tomorrow.

The 24-year-old played Championship football for Wolves under Mick McCarthy before being forced into retirement due to a long-standing nerve problem.

But he is now hoping to launch a comeback in the non-League game, and has impressed during three training sessions with the Bucks.

“He’s a good player, there’s no doubting that,” said boss Rob Smith.

“He’s extremely talented.

“He’s not played a lot of football so it’s a case of taking it steady. He certainly likes to throw it around in training so we’re signing him on non-contract terms – it’s a chance for us to look at him and him to look at us.”

Dublin-born O’Connor – who played three games for Wolves in 2008 and also had a seven-game loan spell with Stockport County in 2006 – approached the Bucks via coach Steve Wynn, who lives close to him in Wolverhampton.

And Smith feels his hunger to get back into the game could make him an asset for Telford as they look to climb the Blue Square North table.

“He wants to play for us, and that’s refreshing,” added the delighted manager.

“We’ve seen enough in training to get him involved in the squad for tomorrow’s game.

“We’ve got a small squad and we’re actually struggling to fill the substitutes’ bench, so it’s a no-brainer for me.”

It is three weeks today since Telford last played, though Smith feels the enforced break has actually helped a few players shake off minor knocks and niggles.

Right-back Lee Vaughan and striker Andy Brown are both suspended tomorrow, while midfielder Carl Rodgers is struggling with flu – though he is still expected to feature.
