Group could open third pub in town

Bosses at pub giant JD Wetherspoon are eyeing up a third venue in Shrewsbury because business in the town is going really well, they revealed today.

The firm already runs the Shrewsbury Hotel in Smithfield Road and Montgomery’s Tower in Lower Claremont Bank. But it said people in Shrewsbury seemed to like Wetherspoon venues and a third pub was a possibility.

However, they said they would only consider opening a third venue if the firm could find a location far enough away from the existing pubs.

Dan Johnson, area manager for Shropshire and Staffordshire, said: “We are doing very well in Shrewsbury. We would consider opening a third. Shrewsbury seems to be a town where people like Wetherspoon pubs.

“It’s big enough that if potentially a site cropped up far enough away from where we are currently trading we would look at it.”

Mr Johnson said the two existing pubs were also different enough anyway.

He said: “They offer a good difference between the two as the Shrewsbury Hotel is a more traditional pub. Everybody knows your name when you go in and it’s what you expect a pub to be.

“Montgomery’s Tower is combining a slightly more modern theme and has the late-night aspect to it which is going considerably well.

“They are both the same company but complement each other well.”

Montgomery’s Tower opened in July 2008, the venue was previously called Bar Med.

The Shrewsbury Hotel reopened last week after it was closed for two weeks because of the Shrewsbury explosion on January 3.

Bosses said the pub and hotel sides of the business were both operating as normal and issued a message of thanks to people who helped out in the area in the aftermath of the blast.

The pub was one of a number of buildings which suffered damage when the explosion happened on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road. At the pub, windows and doors were broken, a giant umbrella in the beer garden was demolished and cars in the car park damaged.
