A metal casket containing a mystery woman’s ashes has been found dumped in a skip in Telford by a passer-by.

The casket is simply inscribed “In remembrance of my loving wife Daphne” and police have now launched a hunt for the owner.

Telford police spokesman Pete Simmonds said the metal, possibly stainless steel, box was found on Wednesday in a skip on Halesfield 5 by a member of the public who happened to be walking past.

He added: “On seeing that the casket had a plaque on it, the man decided to remove it from the skip and has now handed it in to officers at Malinsgate police station.

“Officers have carried out a number of inquiries to attempt to establish who owns the casket but have so far drawn a blank.”

Mr Simmonds said the casket also bore the date the woman died and added: “At this point in time we have no idea how the casket came to be in the skip but we are very grateful to the man who brought it in to Malinsgate police station.

“It goes without saying that we are keen to find the owner of this casket so that we can return it to its rightful home.”

The find comes after a green, velvet bag containing the ashes of a woman was stolen in a burglary at a house in Red Lake, Telford, on December 12.

Mr Simmonds said it did not appear at this time that the incidents were linked.
