Taylor in frame to step up for Town

Paul Simpson, the head coach/manager of Shrewsbury Town, shouts orders to his players

Boss Paul Simpson could hand a full Shrewsbury Town debut to youth teamer Danny Taylor in tomorrow’s League Two clash at Burton Albion.

Regular right-back Dean Holden serves a one-match ban this weekend, following his dismissal in the 1-0 win at Chesterfield on January 2.

And, with no recognised senior cover in his squad, Simpson could be poised to hand the shirt to teenager Taylor, who has already been on the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks.

Simpson is pondering his options, which could include playing either Paul Murray or Craig Disley out of position to cover Holden’s absence.

First year pro Harry Hooman is another in the frame to fill the void, having made his debut earlier in the season.

But Taylor, a natural right-back who has impressed in the reserves, could be in pole position to get the nod.

“If Danny Taylor gets an opportunity, then it is up to him to show what he can do and it is up to the senior players to help him,” said Simpson.

“He looks promising but it is difficult to judge in training. You don’t know if they are ready until you stick them in there.

“If I decide to go with Danny, then it’s a case of fingers crossed and hoping for the best.”

Shrewsbury were the first opposition for Paul Peschisolido’s Burton side, who marked their League bow with a 3-1 defeat at the Prostar Stadium back in August.

But the Brewers have since gone on to pick up some decent results and remain on the fringes of the play-off race.

“They had a great run after that first game,” added Simpson. “They are a very good side at home, their record at the Pirelli Stadium is excellent.

“But we can go in there with confidence after two good away wins.

l Burton officials remain optimistic that tomorrow’s game will go ahead despite today’s heavy rain and more forecast overnight.
